90s Night @ the BET Awards

[I apologize, this was supposed to have gone up last night, but I did smething wrong.]

I don't know if you got a chance to catch last night's BET Awards, but aside from being the usual glamorous, hood-rich affair we hate to love and love to hate, Ms. Alicia Keys gave us some nice surprises. She started out with 'Teenage Love Affair' in true 50s girl group style: one lead, 3 bubbly backups. After she finished, she suddenly went into 'Weak' by SWV. SWV was the girl group in the early 90s next to TLC...definitely 'sisters with voices'. Biggest hits include 'Weak' [duh], 'I'm So Into You', and 'Right Here', which samples Michael Jackson's Human Nature. These girls were queens of the New Jack Swing movement and they were gorgeous, changing style for women all over. They wore head to toe leather and pulled off street but sweet very well: Timbs, baggy pants and a whole lot of midriff. And those nails. Oh my God. You can see them here

on Coko [yikes!], but Taj an and Lelee wore em too. They were scary-long but somehow they managed to carry them off. When they came onstage, they still sounded great after all these years. I swear to you, I played their first cassette [yes, I know] till it broke.

After applause and cheers, SWV got off stage and the groove from 'Hold On' by En Vogue started. My jaw dropped when they came down those steps, belting that song like it was coming from their CD, Funky Divas. It's a great album, I highly recommend it. It's *girl power* before the Spice Girls made feminism campy.

And finally...the remaining members of TLC did 'Waterfalls' with Alicia. CrazySexyCool [title of one of their biggest-selling albums] sums it all up; I mean, there's really nothing left to say about TLC in their prime. Although T-boz sounded like crap, it was good to hear from them anyway.

So today, look back on the 90s fondly. The wraps, the nails, the colors, the red-red lipstick, the condom in the glasses [R.I.P., Left-Eye] all made it fun. And even though SWV, En Vogue, and TLC more or less imploded, remember the days of brassy girl groups kicking ass and taking names with the best of the boys.
