Photo Friday: A Young Lady's Guide to Romance

This is a real, live comic book cover from 1949. Love comics flourished in the 40s and 50s, geared towards girls to guide them in matters of the heart. Except, it doesn't seem like these comics give much guidance at all (see the full slideshow on; they just tell girls--almost always girls, never women--that love is all about getting your heart broken. I mean, honestly, the first comic in the First Romance Magazine series is about getting cheated on! That's pretty terrible, and a far cry from the fluffy, perfect relationships that were appearing on movie screens everywhere.

Michael Barson's book Agonizing Love: The Golden Era of Romance Comics is new this week and all about romance comics' love-hate relationship with love. Read more about the history of romance comics in Mr. Barson's article for Entertainment Weekly.
