That'll Be All, Miss Secretary

On April 26, Corporate America celebrate Administrative Professionals Day, formerly known as Secretary's Day. And while plenty of administrative assistants sat down to their desks to find special bundles of candy, it's a sad state of affairs for secretaries. Lynn Peril writes in the New York Times that since the technological advancements of the 50s and 60s, secretaries have been worried about their place in the office. The office of the future was supposed to have floating pods instead of people walking in hallways and computers that did everything.

The office of tomorrow, according to Seagram's

Optimists thought these inventions would give secretaries the leisure to start their workdays at noon and go on vacation for weeks and weeks at a time but others thought electronic computers would render secretaries obsolete. Now, 2 million administrative assistants are out of work because companies can't afford them. Here are some lovely secretaries I just can't get by without:

Miss Moneypenny from the James Bond films

Joan Harris (nee Holloway)
This one's a no-brainer
Marion Crane
I completely forgot that Janet Leigh's character was a secretary in Psycho

Marilyn Monroe
Playing a secretary in Monkey Business (top) and As Young As You Feel (bottom)

  1. Wow, at least you remembered it this year! I usually get a Starbucks giftcard from my bosses every year, but this year they forgot! *sniff sniff*
