Desk Top Tiki Party

It's a "meh" day. Gray and wet, construction going on outside: I don't want to be at my desk but don't really know where else to go. To lighten my mood, I'm plugged into my Exotica station on Pandora.

Exotica is a genre of music enjoyed in the late 50s through the 60s by those who wished Pan-Am could whisk them away on magical flights to faraway lands but were stuck at home.

Pack Up Your Troubles...

My apartment basically looks like this now...via quoteagentleman.wordpress.com

I wanted to be really diligent about posting this week, but I'm moving, and all the packing, etc. has gotten in the way. Fear not! I'll be back in a few days with some exciting stuff (hint: freebies for a lucky lady). Have a great weekend!

Fan-tastic Find

Every once in a while a participate in the Digital Photography School's forum assignments. Your asked to post a photo in a certain category. A couple weeks ago, we were asked to photograph found objects and I snapped a picture of this beautiful fan I found on the sidewalk one day while walking in the rain. Didn't submit it in time, but I like the photos just the same. If I had to guess, I would say it's from the 1960s (If anyone is better at dating these things, please let me know)?

Retrofit: Perfect Dress for a Picnic, No. 2

About a month ago, my boyfriend got me a lovely present, a yellow gingham dress by Ark & Co. from a boutique near his home in Brooklyn. I'm so in love. I though this was the perfect dress for a picnic, but actually this is. Doris Day wears a dress similar to this in The Man Who Knew Too Much, but hers is blue and therefore not quite so cheery and delicious. Best of all, my dress has pockets!

Photo Friday: More Bluestockings

I desperately don't want to believe fall is coming. I'm ignoring the leaves on the sidewalk, I'm ignoring the lower nighttime temperatures, I'm ignoring the triumphant return of the pumpkin spice latte to Starbucks. Hence, the yellow gingham dress I"m wearing today (more on that later). Still, you can't escape the back to school commercials, which get me thinking about back to school clothes.

Freddie Mercury's Google Doodle

Freddie Mercury would have been 65 today. Instead of rocking the hell out of the AARP, he is *sniff* no longer with us. Luckily for us, Google paid tribute to him as only Google can:

So instead of wondering what he'd be like at 65, let's just listen to Queen and don a sweet 'stache.

China Machado, the Original Glamazon

Richard Avedon - China Machado (1958)Two weeks ago, New York magazine, chose a woman in her 80s for the cover of its fall fashion issue. That's a bold move in and of itself but it's even more amazing because the woman on the cover is the groundbreaking supermodel you've probably never heard of. China (the Spanish pronounciation--Cheena) Machado was Richard Avedon's muse in the 50s and 60s and the first nonwhite model to be shot for major magazine covers.

Born Noelie Dasouza Machado in Shanghai, China and her family escaped to Buenos Aires during World War II.
