Giveaway on Vintage Me

I hate that entering this giveaway means having to share it with other people, but here goes: Diva of Vintage Me   is celebrating 100 followers with a giveaway.

The package contains:
1. A pair of blue and white-striped vintage gloves.

2. A vintage compact powder case with a powder puff and some of the original powder still there. This large 1950's compact is in black Enamel with brass Flowers. The brand is Rex Fifth Avenue an American manufacturer of compacts in the 1940's-1950's tied to Dorset Fifth Avenue.

3. Also, I've added a pair of baby blue sparkling hair ornaments!

I never win these things, but I thought it could't hurt to try. Wish me luck.

Dating Advice for Women, 1938

Gosh, I wish I could take credit for this one. Here's a hilarious photo from a 1930s dating guide posted on How About We's Date Report. My personal favorite? Don't pass out drunk on your date with a nice young man.

Table of my dreams

About two months ago (egads, two months already?) I moved to a new apartment. I've been slowly getting things in order and making it feel like home. The hardest thing has been getting the dining/living area set up. A former coworker of mine was a huge help when he sold me his Formica table with red vinyl chairs from Target.

Let's leave the table for a minute. Guys. These chairs have glitter. These are the Lucy Diner Chairs from Target. I can't think of a more cheerful place to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, elevenses, afternoon tea...

The table is fabulous Formica and has a leaf in the middle for when I have extra guests over. Unfortunately, I won't have more beautiful red chairs for them, but they'll live.

I have the table but I definitely need help putting the rest of the room together. Full disclosure: I'm not actually that good with color. As I was browsing Apartment Therapy, I found this amazing iPhone app called Sherwin-Williams ColorSnap. You take a picture of anything and it generates paint chips.

I think I may want to go all-out retro and add turquoise accents, but it's definitely a lot of fun to play with.

Retrofit: Last Chance Outfits

Today is one of those gray, cool days we get at the beginning of spring. Yesterday and plenty of the days before today have been beautiful but not all of them have, so I've been trying to get some wear out of cool weather outfits I love.

First, a never before posted goody from ModCloth:

I've said it before and I'll say it again--there's nothing like a dress with pockets. I love cowl neck and the 1960s scooter dress feel of this. Very sweet.

Something not so sweet? The suspender tights Christina of Peek Brooklyn gave me for my birthday.

A couple weeks ago I had a chance to pull out my favorite sweater vest. I can't believe it never occurred to me to put this outfit together before. I love the school uniform feel of it (probably because I never had to wear a school uniform in real life). That weird black lump by my feet is my cat.

And today's outfit, a lovely dress I can't believe has never made it to my blog. It's not vintage but it was a steal. I scooped this Calvin Klein dress up at the after Christmas Lord and Taylor sales the year before last and I love it.

sorry for the blurriness. That weird black thing?  It's just my cat.

My former boss (who was a woman and not a creep) told me I looked smokin' hot in it. There's nothing in this world like a sincere compliment from another woman. The bold pattern and shape feel very 60s to me. I happen to consider the dress good luck because I've worn it on two job interviews that went really well. Alas, spring is more or less completely upon us so this one will go to the back of the closet until the temperature drops in the fall. Not that I'm rushing it.

Coming Up Roses

I spent my Friday night at the Champagne Riot and the Rioteers didn't disappoint. Jezebel Express and Gin Minsky, two of the Rioteers, were fantastic as usual. Jezebel did a great number that involved popping balloons. I love it when burlesque includes a little joke here and there. Stage kitten Evelyn Vinyl performed for the first time at the Riot and her classic fan dance was, um, fantastic (I like puns too). Pardon, everything had to be Instagrammed because my camera's flash has gone kaput. Not that I took many photos anyway, but here's Evelyn anyway:

I chatted with the nice man next to me, an older gentleman who's the last of the put on a suit and speak Brooklynese generation. He decided to come, by himself, to the show because he read about it in Time Out New York. He told me he didn't like skinny strippers and we had a good laugh.

I didn't have the right floral dress, so I took the chance to get a new Kay Windsor goody from Vintage a la Mode, via Ebay. It was a steal and it's gorgeous.

And there's Gin Minsky and Dandy Wellington in the background!

My friend took photos so a proper photo should be on its way soon. Of course, I popped a few stitches doing the Charleston, but that's an easy fix.
Stay posted for information about the next Champagne Riot, and check out the events calendar for more fun stuff to do this week!

Everybody, Everywear: Lavender Lovely

Image 4554

I am late to the Everybody, Everywear party, as usual. The sad thing is, it's gotten chilly again so rather than get all spring-y with my wardrobe, I've taken the time to get those last few wears out of my favorite colder-weather items of clothing. But I did want to submit because I want to get into the swing of spring, honestly, but it's in the 50s and overcast. Blech.

Anywho, I love this skirt and you'll probably be seeing it again this spring and summer.

P.S. Speaking of lovely lavender things, I highly recommend shelling out the $10 for L'Occitane's lavender sachets.

New York's Easter Parade

Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra return to their post at the Easter Parade!

They start playing just north of Saint Patrick's Cathedral near Fifth Avenue and 54th Street (In front of the University Club), beginning at 12:30. Hopefully, that's enough time for me to go to services with my grandmother and make it to the city in a funny hat (because this parade is really all about the Easter bonnets). I love a good parade, especially a parade in New York. Here's hoping I can go to this year's Easter Parade!

According to the Huffington Post, "the parade tradition began as a 19th century gathering of New York's social elite in their Easter best after church services – along with similar parades around the nation that took off after the Civil War. New York's version has become a semi-secular feast." Anyone going to the Easter Parade or something similar in their cities?

House Beautiful: Perfect Tins

It seems it's been a million years since I've been in blogland. Work is really quite busy and I'm still in the process of slowly, slowly getting my house in order. Figuring out the basic things like where the hell to put the furniture has been harder than I thought, especially since I'd been thinking for months about the the knickknacks I would put on shelves rather than, say, the fact that I need way more extension chords.

But! To give my room the cozy country feel I've been looking for, I snapped up these incredible tins for just $20 at the Brooklyn Flea. And they actually each contain sugar, flour, coffee (pre-ground) and tea (in bags because I have too many kinds of loose leaf tea).
