My Talk with Alicia Estrada

In May I started writing for and it's been great because I've gotten to delve into some of my old-lady interests (like disco). I was so thrilled when I got to have a phone chat with the owner of Stop Staring! Clothing, Alicia Estrada.

Alicia designs gorgeous vintage-inspired dresses (40s and 50s, with some 30s detailing mixed in) and she built the company from the ground up. She's very sweet and about to be a mother for the first time (congratulations!). I absolutely love that she literally sewed every piece that went into the boutiques. An interesting note on Alicia's personal style that didn't make it into the article:

"I was a punk rock girl who was inspired by retro. So if you could imagine I was shopping at thrift stores, I was tearing clothing apart, remaking it. I would take a big 1960s mumu in big psychedelic prints and cut it apart and turn it into little blouses or skirts. And so I was just that girl who wasn’t necessarily attracted to one era. Back then in college, most of the stuff was 1960s and 1970s inspired because that’s what I could find in the thrift stores,"
