Retrofit: Femme Fatale Style

We love the women of film noir because they're bad but they look so good doing it. Here, a tribute to femme fatale style:

In Walked Trouble - Femme Fatale

Who's a better femme fatale than that deliciously wicked Ava Gardner?

No femme fatale is complete without an accentuated waist (I'm so in love with this 40s-style suit-dress), seamed stockings, and red lipstick. What's your favorite femme fatale outfit?

And remember: there's still time to enter The Big Book of Pulps giveaway. There are four ways to enter and every action is its own entry:

1) Follow me on Blogger and leave a comment saying something along the lines of "hey, I'm following, and I really want this brick of a book!" If you're already a follower, you still have to leave a comment.
2) Tweet "I entered the Scandal! Intrigue! Birthday! Big Book of Pulps #giveaway and you should too: @d_funkt @weeklylizard" and then leave a link to your tweet in the comments.

4) Pin the book cover on Pinterest from my Books Worth Reading Pinterest pinboard.

GIVEAWAY: Scandal! Intrigue! Birthday!

On Sunday, I turn 24. It took me a while to decide what I wanted to do (I even considered skipping birthday fanfare altogether and just buying myself a really, really big cupcake) since I'd been feeling kinda down and probably couldn't spring for a new outfit anyways. I've cheered up and come to my senses and I have a vintage birthday weekend ahead.

R.I.P. Etta James, 1938-2012

I was pretty sad when I heard about Etta James passing away, especially after I just started listening to her more.  The Awl did a tribute to her the way I would've. Read about her life and listen to more of her music here.

Retrofit: Professional Poindexter

I started a new job yesterday at an academic book publisher, and I'm really excited. It's not as boring as it sounds--I'm not going to be editing math textbooks. My first big-girl job, with benefits and business cards I didn't order from Vistaprint. It's been a helluva long time coming, a long, frustrating road, but I get to relax for a bit now. Thank. Goodness.

A big day required an outfit I'd never put together before. I had to dress the part of a competent, professional lady poindexter. Enter:  the sweater vest.

Flavorwire's 10 Iconic Civil Rights Photographers

In honor of Martin Luther King Day, Flavorwire put together an incredible series of photos by important photographers who captured the Civil Rights Movement. Here's one of my favorites in the series, by James Karales:

This is a photo of the Selma-to-Montgomery March for Voting Rights in 1965. I also found this one really powerful precisely because it isn't of fire hoses and police dogs; it puts a face to racism:

Photo Friday: Black Cats a Go-go

This Friday the 13th, I'm tempting fate with this photo of cats auditioning for a movie in 1961. Black cats. Dozens of them!

See the rest of the adorable photos on How to Be a Retronaut.

Everybody, Everywear: Black and White

Black + White | Everybody, Everywear

I don't really wear black and white. Don't know what it is; I just never seek out ensembles in those colors. Jackie O. made the observation that people who wear white shirts with black bottoms always end up looking like waiters. Plus, in high school and middle school, all my orchestra and band concerts required black pants and white button-down shirts, so that particular combination leaves a very stuffy, uniform-y taste in my mouth.

However, I have a black and white gingham top I wear to death and, more importantly, my saddle shoes. I wear my Vans saddle shoes to death, and I like to turn the shoe of good girls and poindexters on its head by pairing it with a saucy pair of tights, like so:
Saddle shoes and fishnets, wardrobe staples
Camera was on the fritz, so to Instagram we go!
Fishnet tights by Spanx. You need these in your life.

My black and white saddle shoes go with just about everything. And the things they don't go with? Well, I'll be getting a pair of tan and white saddle shoes for spring and summer.

Etta James, "Trust In Me"

I heard "Trust in Me" a couple weeks ago and fell absolutely in love. That voice and those lyrics completely sweep me away.

Trust In Me by Etta James on Grooveshark

I've been thinking about Etta James a lot lately, partly because I stumbled across "Trust in Me", but also because she's been sick. Her health has been bad for a few years, but as of this Monday, she was breathing on her own. Here's hoping she leaves intensive care soon.
