Bring Back Dusting Powders!

A beautiful vintage dusting powder tin
for sale on Etsy
I love all the beauty products out there (Sephora is my playground), but I'm sort of an old-fashioned girl when it comes to skincare. Nothing removes makeup like cold cream, and since it moisturizes as well, that's one less thing to do before I collapse exhausted (or, um, tipsy) into bed.

For the past several days, New York has been hot. Really, really hot. I carry a paper fan in my purse but it's not always enough to keep me from feeling icky. And then I remembered how my grandmother always kept a tin of delicious-smelling powder on her dresser. Her powder puff seemed like the softest thing in the world. I didn't know it then but I know now the powder absorbs moisture beautifully. So the other night, and I was stewing in sweat, I wondered: why aren't dusting powders as popular as they used to be?

5 Notable Latino Contributions to Disco Music

Willie Colon without facial hair. Weird.
I'm a writer in my real life, and I'm always excited when I get to combine my love for old things with my writing gigs. My piece on Latinos and disco music went up on last week, and I'm really excited. I put together a list of five songs from the era that show that disco borrowed as much from Latin music as Latin music of the 70s borrowed from disco.

This Week in Instagram

Some say that because Instagram has gotten so popular it's now completely useless and not cool. As someone without a properly functioning camera, I'm going to go ahead and say that Instagram is still very cool and so each week I'll be sharing stuff with you guys from my Instagram account, and maybe even from my friends' streams, since they have interesting stuff too.

Really, I use Instagram because I'm always amazed by all the stuff I see. The beautiful details in a building, adorable dogs, a great pair of shoes. Taking pictures when I'm not "prepared" to makes me realize that even on the crappiest days I'm surrounded by beauty. So. It won't always be vintage, but it will hopefully be interesting.

Manhattan Serenade at Duane Park

Last night I took my boyfriend and the same game friend that went with me to the Kentucky Derby party to the Wednesday night burlesque show at Duane Park, starring Dandy Wellington and His Band. Duane Park is one of the most popular places to see burlesque in New York, especially with a live band, but last night was my very first time.

Hello. I'm trying to get a proper handle on my blog stuff so my lovely readers can get to things easily. First:

I've changed my Twitter handle. I'm no longer @d_funkt (that was my username when I first started using Blogger) and now I'm @itsdlovely. Tweet me and let's be friends.

I'm no longer going to use the Google Connect widget. Instead, I'm going to ask that you all subscribe to my feed however you usually curate your feeds. I personally love Google Reader. But I'm also on Bloglovin if that works. Thanks for being flexible and we'll be back  to our regularly scheduled programming shortly!

Hilarious Jon Hamm Video

I nearly cried watching Jon Hamm give advice to teenage girls, who are admittedly pretty funny on their own, at times.

I love him even more than I did before.

Leibster Blog Award

Not to be all Sally Fields and stuff, but they like me, they really like me! Shon of The Sunflower Mama Chronicles passed on the Leibster Blog Award to me last week and since I've been busy with work/feeling famous, I'm only getting to this now. But a big thanks to Shon. OK, the rules are:

1. Thank and link back the person who awarded you
2. Write 7 random things about yourself
3. Spread the love to 15 more bloggers

I had to dig into the archives to make sure I didn't repeat myself for those of you playing along at home. Here we go, Seven Random Things:

Dressed for the Races

This year's Kentucky Derby viewing party at The Bell House was just as much fun as last year's (even though this year we had to pay $10 to get in to the previously-free bash. I'm on to you guys).

Retrofit: Mods to a ModCloth dress

If you've been poking around here for a while, you know one of my favorite dresses is the Soda Fountain Dress in ginger from ModCloth.

When I first posted about the dress, I commented on it needing starch since it gets wrinkled easily. That's an easy enough fix. A mere month after that I accidentally ripped the little capped sleeve while reaching to open the passenger side door. I can't sew to save my life so I had it patched up at the tailor. That didn't hold. A seam ripper mistake and tailor visit later, this is what I got:

Vintage Kentucky Derby Fashion

Sigh. It's the day before the Kentucky Derby and I don't have a hat. Derby fashion, as we know, is all about the hats. I don't really care about horse racing (the most exciting two minutes in sports, they call it); I'm in it for the clothes. Here's some of the best vintage Derby fashion the Interwebs has to offer:

Today in Crazy Old Celebrities

Barry Manilow said he was the original Justin Bieber. Yes, he actually said that.
