LOL: Fashion in "Fawlty Towers"

A couple weeks ago, I binge-watched all the episodes of "Fawlty Towers" Netflix had to offer. For those of you who don't know the show, get to know it ASAP. It is absolutely hilarious. John Cleese stars as Basil Fawlty, the grumpy busybody owner of an inn. He and his wife Sybil strive to make their establishment posh with the help of the pretty, young Polly and their Spanish butler and waiter Manuel.

The hijinks of the Fawlty staff keep you in stitches, yes, but their fashion is funny, too. It was the 70s, after all.

This is Mrs. Fawlty. She never met a ruffle she didn't like.

Polly is a waitress, maid and general girl Friday. So I fail to understand why her uniform includes this enormous 70s-does-30s bow that would be a bit too much even for Ginger Rogers. Wouldn't it get in the soup?

And while we're on the subject of neckwear, I love all the bows in the show. Pussy bows galore! These blouses can actually be incorporated into real life with little hilarity.

Sybil in her enormous wig and trademark pussy bow blouse in a shade approaching Pepto Bismol pink.

Oh my goodness, this vest and this necktie combination has substitute teacher written all over it. I die.

Throughout the show, Basil dons some ascots that are pretty hilarious. This one's well tied but sometimes they gape around his neck, adding to the whole perfectly disheveled, not-quite-posh look of Basil and his inn.

Classic 70s. Honestly, what is the point of wearing a shirt if it's going to be unbuttoned to the navel? This gentleman is dripping in gold chains and is wearing leather pants. I imagine he needs a shoe horn and half a can of Crisco to get in and out of those.

  2. Fawlty Towers is the greatest! Speaking of (Great) British sitcoms, have you ever watched Keeping Up Appearances?

    1. I watched a couple episodes and I didn't love it. It just couldn't measure up to John Cleese's shenanigans! It might be worth another try, though.
