Born in 1931 in Middle of Nowhere, Indiana, James Dean achieved in three movies and five years what most actors hope to accomplish in a lifetime. But full disclosure: I didn't love "Rebel Without a Cause" but it's possible I just need to watch it again. It is also possible I was just blinded by my hate of Natalie Wood. She's gorgeous and everything but she drives me friggin nuts.
|James Dean in "East of Eden" and not with Natalie Wood. Ugh.|
Andy Warhol said of Dean, "He is not our hero because he was perfect, but because he perfectly represented the damaged but beautiful soul of our time." I think that's why we love him--because his beautiful eyes can be just so darn sad and intense. You want to wipe away all his beautiful, beautiful tears.
Then there's that whole was he or wasn't he gay/bisexual thing, similar to the rumors surrounding co-star and good friend Marlon Brando (coincidence?).
Some say he messed around with male actors or producers just to further his career; a good friend said they experimented once or twice because they were young artists in New York and that's just what you do; still others said he was definitely gay. As for Dean himself? He reportedly said "No, I am not a homosexual. But I'm also not going to go through life with one hand tied behind my back." Oh, James, how coy!
