It's been too long since we've taken the chance to ogle some hotness for Monday Man Candy. I'm picking Omar Sharif this week since he's been in my mind since I had the chance to see "Lawrence of Arabia" on the big screen at Film Forum about a month ago.
Omar Sharif was born Michel Demitri Shalhoub in Alexandria, Egypt. He is made even hotter by his smarts; he majored in math and physics in college and speaks about a million languages. He was a big star in Egyptian movies but he was first introduced to international audiences in "Lawrence of Arabia", for which he received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. His title role in "Doctor Zhivago" got him his first Golden Globe.
In "Funny Girl", he plays gambler and general lout Nicky Arnstein opposite Barbara Streisand. Half the movie is her being like "Oh my God! Men this hot don't pick girls that look like me!" and as a viewer you're kinda like, um, yeah, you're so right. The movie was banned in Egypt because Streisand, as well as her character in the movie, is Jewish. When the government found out about his affair with the pro-Israel actress, he very nearly lost his citizenship. Yikes.
I fail to see how anyone can stay mad at him. It's a little hard to track down photos of Omar Sharif smiling but when he does, it is so worth it.
I don't speak French, but the beginning of the video brings me pure joy because you see Sharif smiling and frolicking in the waves in the tiny bathing suits popular at the time.
Unlike Monday Man Candies of the past like, say, Errol Flynn, Sharif is relatively scandal-free. He was only married once! He's been fined in the last decade or so for slapping police officers, but that's child's play in Hollywood. Now, Omar Sharif is 82 and spending all his time playing bridge and writing books on the subject.
Lastly, please enjoy this blurry but satisfying picture of a naked Omar Sharif in 1969's "Mackenna's Gold".
This movie is now at the top of my list because it has Omar Sharif and the gorgeous Gregory Peck. Wonder if he gets naked, too?
